Growing Trees and Plants in Pots

Growing trees and plants in pots is a great option if you don’t have a lawn or you have a small garden area. Here are some varieties that grow well:

  • Lemon trees. These are not hardy and will not fare well out of doors in the winter. However, they will grow well outside in the summer so just bring them inside during colder weather. Make sure they are planted in pots with good drainage.
  • Japanese maple. Use a loam compost and plenty of organic matter, then make sure the soil is kept evenly moist. Maples will need replanting every two or three years.
  • Camellias. Add some colour to your patio in the winter months with the delicate flowers of camellias. Sometimes soil can be too alkaline for them to grow well, so cultivating them in pots is perfect.
  • African lilies. These flowers grow well in large containers, though they may need to be kept in a greenhouse in cold weather.
