One of the biggest risks to your garden over the year is the winter period. The lack of sunlight will reduce the amount of energy that plants have, which will mean that if any of them suffer from an injury or disease, the winter period will be the worst time of year for them to cope with such an event. The frost is also a big risk, with many plants which you may have introduced to your garden over the years not being well adapted to freezing conditions.
Preparing your garden for the winter should be done around now, as we begin to move into a period where there is a potential for freezing conditions overnight. The best way to do this is by removing plants which aren’t able to cope with freezing weather from your garden and bringing them inside your home/greenhouse, but if that isn’t possible, you may want to consider containing them in transparent material, like plastic, which will seal them from the majority of the moisture in the air while still providing them with sunlight. For an added level of protection, insulating their roots by laying out a lot of leaves and mulch can also be very effective.
