You might often read that you need to fertilise plants and flowers. However, there are so many different varieties on the market. How do you know which one you are best to use? Here is some advice for you regarding fertilisers:
- Most shop-bought fertilisers contain a blend of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash. This helps leaves, roots and shoots to grow for a happy, healthy plant. Different plants require different levels of these elements, so research your individual plants.
- Don’t use fertilisers alone. Plants also require good soil, which needs adequate drainage. Improve compost with manure and compost.
- Try to keep fertiliser use to a minimum. Plants will not need much in order to boost their growth.
- Don’t buy too many different fertilisers. Often, one kind will be suitable for lots of different types of plant.
- Use more of sandy soils. These tend to have fewer nutrients in them, whereas clay soils have more.
