Is your garden a safe haven for little ones?

Once the warmer months come people tend to spend a lot more time in the garden either relaxing with a glass of something cool, tackling some garden maintenance or playing with the children. It is important that if the garden is going to be used regularly by young children that it is a safe place to play and that any accidents are minimised as much as possible.

The most obvious danger in a garden is if there is a pond or water feature near the area that the children will be playing in. Children can drown in very shallow water, so any pond or water feature needs to be covered with strong netting to make sure that it is safe and prevent anyone falling in.

Plants around the garden should be non-toxic as some plants such as foxgloves are highly poisonous. A tree that should be avoided is the laburnum tree as every part is poisonous if ingested.

Trips and falls are inevitable with young children but to avoid serious injury fences and gates can be used to keep them away from dangerous areas. It is a good idea to use some type of safety flooring under swings and slides because should there be a fall, injury will likely be minor.
